This is my first week as a NTIC student. I find it quite difficult to get to know the virtual learning things and classmates as it's online, however, I hope that I can get closer to them soon.

The work in the first week of visual culture is to select an object or an image that link to your culture, and this is what I've chosen.

What is it?

A scene from an animation called ‘9 Satra’

Who made it?

Exformat Films (a movie studio)

What is it for?/ Why was it made?

To entertain audiences

Describe what it looks like and what it is made from

This scene is made from cgi and is shot from below which make the whole setting seem enormous. The colour is in cold tone. There are 2 characters, which are a monk tattooing a man, in the left-center. The light from above help highlighting the Buddhist statue in the background and the characters, leading the audience eyes from the background to the dominant point.

Why did I choose it?

This scene is a good example of visual culture that has shown a clear Thai culture through the religious ceremony performed in the picture.

Explain how your object links to visual culture

The overall scene, the characters, and the action of the characters delivers the religious culture of Thai people. The Buddhist statue in the back and how the monk tattoos the man resemble of how Buddhism has cultivated strong relation to Thai lifestyle, which is one of the clearest aspect of Thai culture. As this idea can be understandable from the setting of this scene, it can be an example of visual culture.

What I've learned from doing this is that I have a better understanding of what is visual culture, which is a good start to know the importance of it. I hope that the coming weeks will lead me to explore deeper about visual culture.
